Al C. Leu, age 79, a resident of 8720 English Lake Road, Manitowoc entered into eternal life on Monday evening, October 18, 2010 at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay.
Al was born on April 5, 1931 in Manitowoc to the late Albert and Anita LaMarche Leu. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1949. Following his graduation, Al enlisted with the United States Army. He served at Fort Belvoir, VA from 1949 until 1952. Following his honorable discharge, Al returned to Manitowoc and first worked for Manitowoc Engineering and then worked for the Manitowoc Post Office as a postal clerk for 30 years until his retirement in 1986. On May 5, 1962, Al married Sharon Sellen at Bethany Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. Al enjoyed spending his time working in his vegetable gardens, riding his bicycle, woodworking, and assembling jig saw puzzles. Above all, Al cherished the time he was able to spend with his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served as head usher and held several other church and school positions.
Survivors include Al's wife of 48 years, Sharon; children Bobbette (James) Timmermann, Wisconsin Rapids; Shawn (Sara) Leu, Newton; Amy (John) Bock, Manitowoc; and special family member Lisa Emmert, Tavenier, FL.; grandchildren Adam and Evan Timmermann, Jacob and Johanna Leu; brother Donald (Sandra) Leu, Clayton, NC.; cousins Loma (Wayne) Gaulke and Sharon Evensen; nephews Jay and Jody Leu; and niece Jeannene (Robert) Donahue. Al was preceded in death by his father, Albert; mother, Anita Landis; infant sister, Audrey; stepfather, Harry Landis; and sister-in-law Nancy Leu.
The family will greet relatives and friends at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 7531 English Lake Road, Manitowoc on Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 4 pm until 7 pm. The visitation will continue on Friday from 9:30 am until the beginning of the funeral service at 11 am. The Rev. Victor Headrick will officiate with burial to follow at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded by VFW Otto Oas Post 659.
Al's family would like to extend a special thank you to Newton First Responders, Manitowoc Ambulance Service, and the staffs of the Aurora Emergency Room and the Bellin Cardiac Unit for the care they provided.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church or Manitowoc Lutheran High School.
