Andrew M. Houston Jr., age 89, of 1113 Fairmont Lane, Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc where he resided the past three weeks.
Andy was the son of the late Andrew and Ella (Johnstone) Houston Sr. He was born on October 11, 1926 in Glasgow, Scotland and was very proud of his Scottish heritage. Andy came to the United States with his parents in 1930. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1945. Andy continued his education at Carroll College where he graduated and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. He served his country with the United States Navy as a medical corpsman during World War II. On June 17, 1950 following his graduation from Carroll College, Andy married the former Carol Hansen at First Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. They then moved to Escanaba, Michigan where Andy was employed as a Field Executive for the Boy Scouts of American and after five years he became the District Scout Executive in Eastern Indiana. Following his work with the Boy Scouts program he was employed at the Mirro Aluminum Company for 32 years in various management positions including Plant Manager of Plant #1 and #4 in Two Rivers. His lifelong interest in the Boy Scouts began with his entrance into scouting at the age of 12 and continued to the present. Andy was a member of the Order of the Arrow, an Eagle Scout, a Scoutmaster and an Executive Board member for the Waumegesako Council. He received the Silver Beaver Award in recognition for distinguished service to boyhood. In later years Andy served as a nature volunteer and taught programs for school children at Camp Sinawa. Andy was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served as an elder of the congregation. He also served as a past commissioner for the Manitowoc Public Utilities. Andy enjoyed many years of camping with his wife, Carol at their trailer in Door County and many wilderness canoe trips with friends in the Quetico area of Canada.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years: Carol; two daughters and one son-in-law: Cathy Houston and John Thompson, Eau Claire; Wendy Timm, Stewartville, MN; three grandsons: Dylan Timm, Kasson, MN; Nathan (Emily) Timm, Inver Grove Heights, MN; Andrew (Karli) Thompson, Eau Claire; one granddaughter: Mackenzie Thompson; one great grandson: Malcolm Houston Timm; one sister and brother-in-law: Nan and Curt Brewer, Oconomowoc; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and many special friends also survive. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law: Jessie and Gerhardt Vetter; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Robert and Mary Hansen; and one nephew: Jeffrey Hansen.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 18, 2016 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Matthew Sauer officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Following the memorial services there will be a luncheon held for relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the funeral home. Cremation took place at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel and burial of his cremated remains will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc.
