Brother Gary Eugene Smith, FSC, entered into eternal life on Saturday, December 24, 2011 at his residence.
A De La Salle Christian Brother for 26 years, he was born July 12, 1944 in Union City, PA., the youngest son of the late Harold E. and Martha E. (Gilson) Smith. Brother Gary earned a BA from Siena Heights University, Adrian, MI and Masters Degrees from Loyola University, Chicago, IL and the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN. He served as a religious catechist, teacher, and administrator in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, Minnesota and Bethlehem, Palestine. His final assignment was the last 14 years at Roncalli High School in Manitowoc, WI. Teaching was his great love, especially teaching Scripture. He enjoyed architecture, especially drawing church buildings, and cooking and dining out with friends were among his favorite activities.
He is survived by two brothers: James F. Smith, Ohio, and Ralf H. Smith, Elletsville, IN; a special niece: Adrienne Smith Quigley, nephews, cousins, friends; the Christian Brothers of his community; and the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Midwest Province.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, December 30, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Waldo, North 14th Street & Waldo Boulevard, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Daniel Felton with the Roncalli Singers, alumni, and the St. Francis of Assisi Funeral Choir providing music. Burial will take place at Resurrection Cemetery in Romeoville, Illinois at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Roncalli High School auditorium, 2000 Memorial Drive, Manitowoc from 3 pm until 7 pm. The visitation will conclude with a prayer service led by Rev. Daniel Felton and Deacon Rich Bahnaman at 7 pm. The visitation will continue on Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Waldo from 9:30 am until the time of services at 11 am.
