Obituary

With faith in the Resurrection of Jesus, we offer our prayers for Reverend Daniel H. Dewane
who entered eternal life on Sunday, January 5, 2014 at the age of 71.

Father was born on November 15, 1942 in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to the late Patrick and Lenore (Healy)Dewane. He attended Marquette University, Milwaukee. He graduated from Liberal Arts in thespring of 1967. After graduation, Dan was enrolled to enter Marquette Law School in the fall of1967. One month before starting law school, Dan answered his calling to serve others.
Dan wanted to be a missionary priest and directly, and as immediately as possible, serve those in great need. Dan selected the Society of Missionaries of Africa, commonly known as the White
Fathers, from the country of Belgium. The White Fathers are a missionary order of priests who
served, primarily, in the colony known then as the Belgium Congo in Africa. Dan attended and
graduated from a White Fathers' University at St. Paul University, Ottawa, Canada in 1971. He
was ordained on May 16, 1971 by Bishop Mark F. Schmitt at Holy Innocents Parish, Manitowoc.
As a missionary, Father served 10 years in the Diocese of Bunia, Republic of Zaire (now
Democratic Republic of Congo), Africa. Father Dan fractured his back while building a bridge at
Bunia. On two separate occasions Father Dan contracted malaria and on two separate occasions
contracted hepatitis and was required to return to the U.S. to recuperate. Due to those illnesses,
he returned to the United States permanently in 1981. Thereafter, Dan then was appointed the
National Director of the Society of Missionaries of Africa.

In 1983, Father Dan commenced service in the Green Bay Diocese. On May 7, 1983, Father
Dewane was appointed Parochial Vicar at Holy Rosary Parish, Kewaunee. He became
administrator of Holy Rosary Parish in 1984 and was appointed Pastor in 1985 after he was
incardinated in the Diocese of Green Bay. Father Dewane served for short periods as Pastoral
Moderator at Corpus Christi Parish, Sturgeon Bay, as well as Temporary Administrator at the
parishes in Stangelville, West Kewaunee, Norman and Mishicot. Father retired on August 1,
2002.

Father Dan frequently reminisced about how much he enjoyed and appreciated his many years at
Holy Rosary Parish and its wonderful parishioners. Father Dan admired the Holy Rosary strong
faith based parishioners as exemplified by the parish, while Father Dan was there, building an
addition to the parish school at a time other diocesan parish schools were being consolidated or
closed.

He is survived by two sisters and brothers-in-law: Kay and Jim Ehrhart, Stillwater, MN; Patsy and Chris Petersen, Colorado Springs, CO; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Pat and Dianne Dewane, Manitowoc, WI; Mike and Sandie Dewane, San Diego, CA; sister-in-law: Kay Dewane, Manitowoc, WI; his house keeper: Angie Kohlbeck, Manitowoc, WI; many nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Dewane.

Reception of the Body by the Regional Vicar Very Reverend Richard Klingeisen will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 9 at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on Waldo, 1121 North 14th Street, Manitowoc, WI. Visitation for relatives and friends will follow until 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. The visitation will continue at the church on Friday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. The Funeral Liturgy, expressing our faith and our hope in the promised glory of the Lord's Resurrection, will follow take place on Friday, January 10, 2014 at St. Francis of Assisi Parish on Waldo site, in Manitowoc at 11:00 a.m., with Bishop Robert F. Morneau, Celebrant, Bishop Robert J. Banks, along with priests of the diocese, concelebrating. Msgr. John Dewane, Father's cousin, will be Homilist. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.
