Obituary

Douglas Blair Hamm was, quite simply, one of a kind. Magnetic, intelligent, kind-hearted, sensitive, and endlessly playful, he possessed a rare gift for bringing out the best in others. His humor was quick and clever, but never at anyone else's expense. A master storyteller, Doug could turn an ordinary moment into an unforgettable memory. He had an infectious enthusiasm for life, a genuine curiosity about the world, and an extraordinary ability to make everyone he encountered feel special. Whether you had known Doug for decades or had just met him, he had a way of making you feel as though you mattered. Because to Doug, you did.

Born on December 28, 1965, in Chicago, Illinois, Doug was the son of Glenn and Catherine Hamm. A lifelong learner with an insatiable curiosity, Doug earned Bachelor of Arts degrees in Business Administration and History from Illinois Wesleyan University, a Master of Business Administration from Illinois State University, and a Ph.D. in Leadership from the University of the Cumberlands. His love of learning was matched only by his passion for sharing knowledge and inspiring others.

Doug enjoyed a distinguished and diverse professional career, bringing his intelligence, leadership, humor, and genuine care for people to every position he held. His career included leadership roles at Vuteq Corporation as Director of Human Resources and Plant Manager; Martin Engineering as Vice President of Operations and Services; and Kohler Company as Director of the Kohler Operating System. He also embraced entrepreneurship as Co-Owner, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Human Resources at Triple Play Fun Zone.

Doug eventually found a particularly meaningful calling in higher education, where his passion for teaching, mentoring, and helping others succeed truly flourished. At Lakeshore Technical College, he began as Program Coordinator and Lead Instructor of Human Resource Management before becoming Dean of Business, Technology, and Hospitality.

One of Doug's proudest professional accomplishments was serving as Vice President of Teaching and Learning at Moraine Park Technical College. This role represented so much of what Doug valued most: education, leadership, collaboration, and the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. For Doug, leadership was never simply about directing an organization; it was about empowering people, recognizing their strengths, and creating an environment where everyone had the opportunity to thrive. His work at Moraine Park was more than a professional responsibility; it was a source of immense pride, purpose, and fulfillment.

Throughout his career, Doug was far more than an accomplished leader and educator. He was a mentor, an advocate, and an unwavering positive force. He believed deeply in the potential of others and never hesitated to champion those who needed encouragement, guidance, or simply someone who believed in them. His leadership was rooted in compassion, authenticity, and the conviction that every person had something valuable to contribute. Doug's greatest accomplishments were not measured by the titles he held, but by the people he lifted up along the way.

Outside of his professional life, Doug embraced the things that brought him joy with the same enthusiasm he brought to everything else. An avid reader and lover of history, he was endlessly fascinated by the stories of the past. He was a devoted train enthusiast, an inspirational baseball coach, and a phenomenal educator in every sense of the word. Whether on the baseball field, in a classroom, or gathered around a table, Doug had a remarkable ability to turn everyday experiences into opportunities for connection, laughter, and learning.

He also understood that some of life's greatest pleasures were found in the simplest moments: spending time with family and friends, sharing stories, enjoying good conversation, and visiting breweries with those he loved. For Doug, the destination was often secondary to the company, the laughter, and the memories made along the way.

Above all, Doug treasured his family. He married Kerry Hamm on June 1, 2013, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Together, they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and the countless moments that make a life together meaningful. Doug was a loving and proud father to Ryan Hamm (Abby), Emily Moe (Justin), and Brent Budnik (Courtney). He also had the joy of welcoming his first grandchild, Eloise Marie Hamm, daughter of Ryan and Abby, into the family. His love for his family was immeasurable, and the relationships he nurtured were among his greatest treasures.

Doug is survived by his loving wife, Kerry Hamm; his children, Ryan (Abby) Hamm, Emily (Justin) Moe, and Brent Budnik (Courtney); his granddaughter, Eloise Marie Hamm; his parents, Glenn and Catherine Hamm; his sister, Glenna Hamm; his parents-in-law, Bob and Sue Braunel; his sister-in-law, Beth Braunel; and his nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Diane DeConinck.

To know Doug was to experience a special kind of warmth. He was the person who could brighten a room with his presence, make someone laugh when they needed it most, and offer encouragement that stayed with them long after the conversation ended. He was playful without being careless, brilliant without being boastful, and compassionate without reservation. He had a way of making ordinary moments extraordinary and ordinary people feel extraordinary.

Doug leaves behind a legacy that cannot be captured by degrees, professional accomplishments, or even the many stories that will undoubtedly be told about him. His true legacy lives in the confidence he inspired, the kindness he extended, the laughter he shared, and the countless people whose lives are better simply because he was part of them.

And while the world feels a little less bright without him, it is comforting to imagine that somewhere beyond this life, Doug is still doing what he did best - sharing a wonderful story, making someone smile, and finding just the right words to make another person feel special.

Because Doug never just entered a room. He made it a better place.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, 628 N. Water Street, Manitowoc.

In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Doug’s name to start a student scholarship fund.
