Obituary

Elmer Eugene Uhlig, age 93, a resident of Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Thursday evening, June 28, 2018 at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Elmer was born in Pine River, Minnesota to Adolph A. and Emma (nee Albrecht) Uhlig on April 30, 1925 with their home on the western shore of Ponto Lake. His schooling began at St. Paul Parochial elementary school in New Ulm, MN where his parents had accepted employment at (then) Dr. Martin Luther College and High School. After returning to the home farm, Elmer finished his schooling at Backus High School. After the passing of his mother in he moved to Manitowoc, WI with his father and uncle Victor Albrecht.

While living in Manitowoc, Elmer worked in farming and on a Merchant ship until he was drafted into the Army. He was trained as a cook and was sent to Yokohama, Japan in the occupational forces. While in Japan, he joined the 11 th Airborne Army Paratroopers and was then stationed at Camp Schimmelpfenig, 11 th A/B Detachment where he became the Chief Instructor for the food service school. In September, 1947 Elmer returned to the United States and was honorably discharged from the Army.

Returning to Manitowoc after his discharge, he continued farm work and driving cattle truck for a local farmer where he met his loving wife Annette (nee) Hemb. On May 1 st , 1948 Elmer and Annette were married at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manitowoc by Pastor Theophil Uetzman. Elmer and Annette spent 68 loving years together until the time of her death on July 24 th 2015. Elmer has been a continuous member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church since their marriage being an active member of the Senior Choir for many years. They had four wonderful children Maynard (Carolyn) Uhlig, Sierra Vista, AZ, Sharon (James) Wondrash, Jelane (Gary) Stone, both of Two Rivers, WI and Jeffrey Uhlig, Sparta, WI. Elmer was preceded in death by his loving wife and his parents, brothers and sisters.

During Elmer's long and rewarding life, he worked as a school teacher in Forest Junction, WI, was a sewing machine sales and serviceman, a truck driver and a branch manager for the Farmco Co-op/FS in Larrabee, WI. Elmer was also was the safety instructor and a licensed chemical applicator for Farmco/FS. After retirement, Elmer and Annette moved to Athelstane, WI were he became an active member of the VFW.

Elmer held several different offices in the VFW, but his favorite job was heading the Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy programs for the Manitowoc VFW Otto Oas Post 659. He also initiated a program that took him to several area schools speaking about his involvement in WWII, proper etiquette for the US flag and setting up displays for military clothing and equipment.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, 916 Pine Street, Manitowoc, with Rev. Daniel Sims officiating. Military honors will be accorded at the church following the services by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post #659. Burial will take place at Knollwood Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church on Thursday from 9 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m.
