Obituary

Emil H. Carstens, age 91, a resident of Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of 3809 Stone Road, Manitowoc, entered eternal life Tuesday afternoon, June 7, 2011 at the Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

Emil was born March 4, 1920 in the town of Manitowoc Rapids, Manitowoc County. He was the son of the late Harvey and Martha Sampe Carstens. Emil owned and operated the home farm in the town of Manitowoc Rapids. His farm was divided into a dairy farm and a poultry farm. Emil retired from farming in 1984. During his lifetime Emil served as a Lake-to-Lake delegate and also a supervisor of the Manitowoc Rapids Town Board. He was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, Manitowoc County Farm Bureau and Lakeshore Farm Management Association. On October 14, 1944 he married Evelyn Behnke at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in the town of Liberty. She preceded him in death on July 19, 1989.

He is survived by three children: Arnold (June) Carstens, rural Manitowoc; Diane (Steve) Kortens, Taus; Caroline (Jerry) Fischer, rural Manitowoc; six grandchildren: Lee (Christina) Kortens, Nancy (Matt) Butterfield, Jonathan Carstens, Karen (David) Kratz, Jeremy (Kelly) Fischer, Sara (Aaron) Disch; nine great grandchildren: Hallie, Claire, Cole and Silas Butterfield; Caleb, Collin, Elliana Kortens; Dawson Disch; Benjamin Fischer; one sister: Ruth (Bill) Behnke, Manitowoc; two sisters-in-law: Evelyn Carstens, Manitowoc; Betty Carstens, Florida; nieces, nephews along with other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents: Harvey and Martha Carstens; wife: Evelyn; two brothers: Elmer and Harvey Carstens; one sister and brother-in-law: Marie and Leonard Carstens.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church, 916 Pine Street, Manitowoc. Officiating will be Rev. Paul Schossow with entombment to follow at Knollwood Mausoleum. Relatives and friends may call at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center, Aurora Medical Center along with Dr. Edward Barylak and his staff at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Care Center for the special care that was given to Emil while he was under their care.
