Gladys M. (nee Hein) Jeffery, 100, of Port Charlotte, Florida was taken peacefully into God's kingdom on Wednesday, November 15th 2017, from Sandhill Gardens where she had spent her final five years resting in tranquility.
Gladys was born on March 22, 1917, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, to the late Otto and Minnie (Sehloff) Hein. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1935. On January 4, 1939, Gladys married Bob Jeffery at the parsonage of 1st German Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on August 7, 1983. She had worked at Dick Brothers Bakery as a bookkeeper, and then managed and maintained rental properties for her family. Gladys went on to work as a sewing instructor at the Vocational School and also in sales at Rummele's Jewelry in Manitowoc. She and her late husband, Bob, were "snowbirds" until she moved to Florida in the mid 1980's. With Gladys' love of sewing, she was able to make beautiful clothing for her children and grandchildren. She also became interested in art, and became proficient in painting. Gladys was "very handy" with a hook, whether it be a crochet hook or a fishing hook! Fishing was also one of her favorite pastimes and she was able to do this well into her 90's. Her hobbies included landscaping in her yard, where she worked independently up until a few years ago. She also loved traveling the world by ship, train and planes, traveling to over 35 countries and foreign lands. Gladys also had a passion for board games like Scrabble and Rummikub and card games such as Sheepshead and rummy. Her affinity for cooking and baking won her awards for her delicious home cooking and baked-from-scratch pies. There wasn't much she couldn't do once she set her mind to it. Until she was 95 years old, she lived independently at Mary Lu Mobile Home Park, surviving Hurricane Charley with minimal damage to her home. Gladys had a heart of gold and was always a devout Christian and was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Cross in Port Charlotte for the past few years.
Gladys will be dearly missed by her daughter, Jean (Chris) Wrightsman; son, Robert Jr. (Clare) Jeffery; grandchildren, Christyl, Mark, Jeff, Cohleen, Cheryl, Robert III and Jenny; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Wayne Larson; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Robert; brother, Gordon (Emily) Hein; and sister, Marion Larson.
