Obituary

Herbert K. Knutsen, age 95, a resident of Manitowoc, died on July 17, 2014 at Rivers Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Herb was born on April 9, 1919 in Escanaba, MI to the late Norman and Elsie Gietz Knutsen. The family moved to a farm in Clay Banks Township in Door County where Herb graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison in 1942. He served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe followed by a long career in engineering. Herb returned to his farm roots and farmed on Union Road in Manitowoc County. In his retirement, Herb maintained a keen interest in world news, politics, and daily walks along Lake Michigan. Using his engineering background, he enjoyed devising solutions to varied projects around the home.

Herb is survived by three step-daughters: Sandra (Jack) Winder, Madison; Judith (Jim) Herr, Estero, FL; and Rosemary Jackson, Bear, DE; sister: Laverne Kinney-Caine, Ozark, AL; brother: Wallace (Jean) Knutsen, Silver Spring, MD; several step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Herb was preceded in death by his wives: Violet Worley Knutsen, Eunice Wigen Knutsen, and Melba Rolland Knutsen; two brothers: Everett and Ivan; parents: Norman and Elsie; and two step-daughters: Sharon Kaminski and Judy Van Trump.

A Life Celebration Social will be held on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center, 620 North Water Street, Manitowoc, located on the south property of the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Cremation has taken place at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel with burial of Herb's cremated remains to be at Valders West Cemetery. Herb's family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to the staffs of Rivers Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center and Hartland Hospice for all the care and compassion they provided.
