Obituary

Hugh Tallman Foster, 78, passed away at Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center, on February 2, 2023, after years of declining health.

Hugh was born on September 7, 1944, to the late Hugh (Sr.) and Marion (Williams) Foster, in Lindsborg, Kansas. He grew up in Waukegan, Illinois, where he attended public schools and graduated from Waukegan West High School in 1962. He later went on to study English at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1966. He met his wife, Elizabeth ("Liz"), at Carthage College, and the two were married on June 3, 1966, in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Hugh was an English teacher at Lincoln High School in the Manitowoc Public School District from 1966 until his retirement in 2000. He was dedicated to his pupils; and many former students and colleagues (as well as friends and acquaintances) remember him fondly for not only his love of language, but for his dry, sardonic wit and sense of humor. Outside of teaching, Hugh was a prolific reader, music connoisseur, cook, baker (he was especially known for his bagels and bread), and a talented woodworker. Hugh created many beautiful pieces of furniture for people near and dear to him over the decades. He also loved the dogs he had as pets throughout his life. In his later years, Hugh also found tremendous solace attending church services and Bible study at St. James Episcopal Church in Manitowoc. Hugh enjoyed helping the less fortunate, and donated to survivors of domestic violence, those experiencing housing insecurity, the elderly, and young people from less fortunate backgrounds desiring to better themselves through higher education.

Hugh is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their two daughters: Amy Bellman, Golden, Colorado; and Lisa Foster, Seattle, Washington; as well as by a sister, three nephews, and a grandson.

Cremation has taken place at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Crematory. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.harriganparksidefuneralhome.com .

In lieu of flowers, donations in Hugh's memory to the Manitowoc Salvation Army would be appreciated.

Per Hugh's wishes, there will be no service. The family will be having a private celebration of life at a later point in time.
