Leroy Orville Werlein , age 84, of Manitowoc, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at St. Mary's Nursing Home.
Lee was born on April 4, 1941, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to the late Francis W. and Evelyn L. (Nelson) Werlein. At an early age, Lee moved with his parents and brother to Panama, where he lived until graduating from high school.
Lee attended the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire, where he earned a bachelor's degree in education with majors in Spanish and French. He later continued his education at the University of Wisconsin, earning a master's degree in Medieval Spanish Literature.
On June 14, 1967, Lee was united in marriage to Joan F. Carson in Langford, South Dakota.
Lee dedicated his life to education, teaching Spanish and French in the Manitowoc School District for 35 years. Following his retirement, he continued to serve as a substitute teacher for an additional 15 years, proudly noting his 50 years of service in the Manitowoc schools.
A lifelong lover of travel and language, Lee led numerous student groups to Spanish- and French-speaking countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Spain, and France. He also worked for a travel company for several years and served as a coordinator for student groups traveling in Mexico with their teachers. Lee, his wife, and their son traveled extensively throughout the United States, Panama, Latin America, and Europe. During retirement, Lee and his wife continued to enjoy traveling together.
Lee was an active member of First Lutheran Church, where he served faithfully as a Sunday School teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Werlein; his son, Steve (Christine) Werlein; and his grandchildren, Jacob, Josh, and Julia. He is also survived by a niece, a nephew, and several cousins.
Cremation has occurred at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel. Private family services will be held at a future date. Lee will be laid to rest at Knollwood Mausoleum, Town of Kossuth.
Lee's family would appreciate memorials in his name to First Lutheran Church, 521 N. 8th St., Manitowoc.
