Lumena C. (O'Hearn) Coffin, age 80, a lifelong Manitowoc resident, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center in Manitowoc.
Lumena was born on February 7, 1930 in Manitowoc to the late James and Marguarite (Buckley) O'Hearn. She graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1948. Lumena then attended Holy Family Hospital School of Nursing in 1948 and 1949, and then went on to obtain her degree from Manitowoc County Normal School in 1952. From 1952 to 1954, Lumena taught grades K-8 in a one room rural school named Highland School. On June 27, 1953 Lumena married Edward D. Coffin at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Manitowoc. She was one of the first diocesan lay teachers having taught at Sacred Heart Catholic School in Manitowoc. Lumena was a wonderful volunteer in the school systems, loved to travel, enjoyed woodworking, sewing, gardening, canning, and spending time with her family.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Edward; 8 children: Mary "Margie" Coffin, Manitowoc; Edward (Mary) Coffin, Waukesha; Elizabeth (Peter) Heck, Appleton; Michael Coffin, Kissimmee, FL; David (Sue) Coffin, Little Chute; Kristin (Doug) Jurgens, Manitowoc; Kitty (Ken) Sundberg, Cottage Grove, MN; and Jane (David) Twohig, Evanston, IL; 12 grandchildren; 2 sisters: Mary (Bill) Salutz and Patricia (Len) Anderson, all of Green Bay; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Lumena was preceded in death by one son, Christopher; 3 brothers; and 2 sisters.
The family will greet relatives and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, N. 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc, on Sunday, January 2, 2011 from 4 pm until 7 pm. A prayer service will be led by Deacon Alan Boeldt at 6 pm. The visitation will continue at St. Francis of Assisi – Waldo on Monday, January 3, 2011 from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am. The Rev. Richard Klingeisen will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family would request any memorials be sent in Lumena's name to Carmelite Monastery, 6100 Pepper Rd., Denmark, WI 54208.
