Obituary

Lyla R. Horbeck, age 85, a Manitowoc resident, passed away Monday, February 2, 2026 at LakeHouse Assisted Living, Manitowoc.

She was born July 24, 1940 in Sheboygan, daughter of the late John and Leona (Schneider) Bennin. Lyla attended Valders High School and Lincoln High School, graduating from Lincoln with the class of 1958. In March of 1959 she married James G. Horbeck in Menominee, Michigan. He preceded her in death on October 12, 1996. Lyla was employed at the Inn on Maritime Bay and later with Holy Family Memorial Hospital until her retirement in 2005. She enjoyed gardening, listening to country music, and line dancing. She also played bingo and enjoyed shooting darts. Above all, she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Lyla is survived by her three children: Jay Horbeck (significant other: Linda), Manitowoc, Lisa Dagneau, De Pere, and Lori (Rich) Bloedorn, Manitowoc; her daughter-in-law: Linda Horbeck; two grandchildren: Alex Gerisch and Falynne Gerisch (fiancé Blake Derge); her sister: Betty (Paul) Kopidlansky, Manitowoc; her brother: Willard Bennin, New Holstein; sister-in-law: Sue Bennin; as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents: John and Leona Bennin; her husband: James G. Horbeck; two sons: James John "JJ" Horbeck and Jeffery Scott Horbeck; daughter-in-law: Carmen Horbeck; siblings: Evangeline (Teddy) Glasow, John (Doris) Bennin, Elaine (Orlando) Gebhardt, Lorraine Otto; and Arno "Roger" Bennin; brother-in-law: Paul Heinzen; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law: John and Jean Horbeck.

Cremation has occurred at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory, Manitowoc, and a celebration of life will take place for Lyla from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center, 620 N. Water Street, Manitowoc. Lyla will be laid to rest at Knollwood Mausoleum, Town of Kossuth, at a later date.
