Obituary

Marilyn B. Hammel, age 90, a resident of the town of Newton, entered eternal life on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Countryside Manor in Sheboygan.

Marilyn was born on November 30, 1930 in Manitowoc to the late Helmuth and Elvira Carstens Sonnenburg.  She graduated from Valders High School with the class of 1948.  On December 16, 1950, Marilyn married Donald L. Hammel at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newtonburg.  Don preceded her in death on October 8, 2019.  She was employed at Newton State Bank in Newton for 46 years.  Marilyn also severed as Treasurer for Osman Co-Op for 10 years and the Town of Newton for 25 years.  Marilyn enjoyed bird watching, tending to her flower gardens, and making wedding cakes.  Whether it was singing, humming a tune, or dancing, Marilyn loved all things music.  She was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newtonburg, the church's Ladies Aid, Senior Choir, and Handbell Choir.

Survivors include Marilyn's five children: Keith (Rosaline) Hammel, Town of Liberty; David (Diana) Hammel, Newton; Dennis (Carol) Hammel, Valders; Daniel (Ginger) Hammel, Valders; and Dawn Marie (Timothy) Radue, Valders; 13 grandchildren: Steven (Pam) Hammel, Scott (Rikki) Hammel, Shaun Hammel and his fiancée Kristy, Stacy Hammel and her special friend Emily, Stuart Hammel, Carrie (Matthew) Wallander, Mark (Kristin) Hammel, Desiree Hammel and her special friend Jason, Deidre (Jason) Reis, Dustin (Samantha) Hammel, Dylan Hammel, Justin (Erin) Radue, and Kaitlin (James) Downey; 22 great grandchildren; sister-in-law: Lucille (Chester) Greunke; special neighbors: Bonnie and Bob Jost; former Caregiver: Bill; also other relatives and friends.  Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband: Donald; parents: Helmuth and Elvira Sonnenburg; sister: Arlyle (Clifford) Doxtator; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Louis and Esther Hammel; three brothers-in-law and two sisters-in-law: Gordon Hammel, LeRoy (Bernice) Hammel; and Delores (Jerome) Schmidt.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church, 7531 English Lake Road, Manitowoc.  Officiating will be Rev. Micah Martin with entombment to take place at Knollwood Mausoleum.  Relatives and friends may call at St. John's Ev. Lutheran Church on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m.  The visitation will continue on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m.  Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.harriganparksidefuneralhome.com

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials in Marilyn's name to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church or Manitowoc Lutheran High School.
