Obituary

Mona Lynette Moen, age 80, passed away at her home in Manitowoc WI on August 6, 2024.

Mona was born to Palmer and Bernice (Berland) Moen on October 19, 1943 in St. Paul MN.  She grew up in a family of four sisters and three brothers, in the vicinity of Waukon IA and Prairie du Chein WI.  She loved all sports, played the trumpet and was a high school cheerleader.  She made many memories by exploring the Mississippi bluffs with her friends and that left her with a life long appreciation of nature and the outdoors.  She graduated from Prairie du Chein High School in 1962, and from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse (La Crosse State University) in 1966 with a degree in physical education.

Mona went on to work for 34 years in the Manitowoc Public School System.  She started the Girls Athletic Association at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, and coached basketball, and track and field.  Her summers were filled with outdoor activities including staffing the waterfront at Camp Manitowish, and introducing many girls to the Boundary Waters as she guided canoe trips out of Ely MN, for Cliff Wold Outfitters.  She led Girl Scout Troop 215 for over 50 years and enthusiastically chaperoned overnights at Camps Manitou and Evelyn, camping in Florida, canoeing in Canada, and backpacking in Colorado.  She rode her bike from Caledonia MN to the 1974 World's Fair in Spokane WA with her brothers Bud and Jim.  Mona was a member of the Woodland Dunes Night Gang for almost 30 years.  She was inducted into the Lakeshore All-Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.

Mona is survived by sisters Bonnie, Lola, Georgia and Barbara (the Jackalopes) and brothers Jim and Bud (the Pink Panthers) along with many well loved sister and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Clayton, and infant sister Georgia May.

Mona was, in her vocation as a public school teacher, a friend and mentor to generations of students.  She lived her Christian faith daily, and worshiped at St. Johns UCC in Schwartzwald WI.

According to Mona's wishes, cremation has taken place and interment will occur at Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.  There will be no formal memorial service but all Mona's friends and family are invited to celebrate her life by enjoying and caring for nature.

Memorial donations may be directed to Woodland Dunes or to a favorite charity.

Mona thanks the physicians, nurses and staff of the Aurora Health Care System for all their help on her cancer journey, and also thanks her St. Johns church family, the Greenies of Troop 215, and her special "sister" and friend Julie Purchatzke for being ready to help whenever she called.

Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, North 11th and St. Clair streets, Manitowoc is assisting Mona's family and friends with burial arrangements.
