Norbert Schreiner, 92, went to meet with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 03, 2012.

Norb was born on December 1, 1919 in St. John, WI to the late Matt and Mary Thiel Schreiner. He attended schools in St. John and Hollandtown. The family moved to New Holstein where Norb worked for Langenfeld Fur Farms. Norb was drafted into the United States Army two days prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was issued a uniform and allowed to go home for the weekend. Once he completed his basic training in North Carolina, he was sent to India for 3 ½ years. There he was a medic and helped set up a hospital for soldiers with malaria in a tea plantation owner's home. The staff consisted of one doctor, one nurse and two medics. When more staffing arrived, he was sent to Dibrugarh to help establish a post office. When Norb returned to the United States, he was stationed in New York City where he handled military mail for overseas. After being honorable discharged in 1945, he began working for Leverenz Shoe Company at the New Holstein plant. In 1968, the company opened a new plant in Valders where he became a foreman. Norb remained with the company for 40 years where he retired in 1985 as a plant manager. He was always grateful to the Leverenz family for the opportunities given him.

On June 18, 1949, Norb married Joyce Lilge in St. Anna, WI. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Valders where he had served in a number of positions. In the past, Norb was a member of the Valders Lions Club, Valders Seniors, Viking Bow and Gun Club, American Legion Post 28, Faith Seniors Breakfast Group, Melody Dance Club, and was the Village of Valders Trustee and President. Norb enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping at Shawano Lake, and playing Sheepshead. For many years, he looked forward to deer hunting in Buffalo County with his buddies – always coming home with a deer. Norb also looked forward to attending the Valders High School football and basketball games; and loved the Packers and Brewers.

Survivors include Norb's wife of 62 years: Joyce; two daughters: Janet (Jim) Fleck, Marshfield; and Diane (Mark) Herrmann, Cato; son: Donald (Debbra) Schreiner, Valders; eight grandchildren: Brian (Jessie) Herrmann, Seymour; Charity (Josh) Wanta, Verona; Kristy (Eric) Jaeger, Whitelaw; Denise Schreiner, Baraboo; Rachel Herrmann and special friend Kevin Tasch, Malone; Cayla Fleck and special friend Tommy Corley, Seattle, WA; Dana Schreiner and special friend Bob Grady, Valders; and Lisa Herrmann, Appleton; four great grandchildren: Bailey Herrmann, Abby and James Wanta, and Emma and soon to be baby Jaeger; sister-in-law: Josie Schreiner, New Holstein; also nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Norb was preceded in death by his parents: Matt and Mary Schreiner; brother: Jerome; infant brother: Melvin; three sisters: Lydia Pethan, Serrie Henseler, and Valaria Loehr; and three brothers-in-law: George Henseler, Gilbert Pethan, and Elroy Loehr (please check spellings of those preceded in death as I had a hard time reading the handwriting).

The family will greet relatives and friends on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Faith Lutheran Church in Valders from 9:30 am to 10:45 am. A celebration of life will be officiated by Pastor Jim Rasmus at 11:00 am. Cremation will follow at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel.
