Robert H.
Zigmund
June 23, 2024
It is with great sadness we share the news Robert H. Zigmund, age 76, a lifetime resident of Manitowoc, died Sunday morning, June 23, 2024, at Care Partners Assisted Living, Manitowoc.
"Zig" was born in 1947, the youngest child of Edmund and Ella Zigmund. He graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School in 1966 and from UW-Whitewater with a Bachelor of Science in 1971. Zig worked a variety of jobs, all of which seemed to suit his personality and talents. Some of these jobs included Mirro Aluminum Company, Allis-Chalmers, Kettle Moraine Racquet Club, Ziggy's Grocery Store, The Washington Station, The Fat Seagull, Zig's Welcome Inn, Pozorski Hauling, Metalware, and as a tennis instructor at the YMCA. He especially enjoyed being a union steward and union president where he traveled to the state capital for conferences and advocacy. Zig took great pride in helping other union members.
Zig loved playing tennis, running, and listening to a wide variety of music. One of many ways Zig showed his love for others was to make a mixed tape (or CD) for them, take them to a concert, or play a song off the jukebox in their honor. His greatest joy was the birth of his only child, Robert. His joy grew the day Robert married his wife Jenn.
Zig's family would like to thank Dr. Gentile, Dr. Erlemeier, Brandon Beck, Dr. Corrigan, Dr. Sherman, the Aurora Hospital staff, Lakeland Care, and Heartland Hospice. Special thanks to Tim Salutz, the neighbors on Union Road, especially Russell and Jean; Kathy, Linda, and the Henke and Graff families.
Zig had an extended family at Care Partners, and we are beyond grateful to the angels who work there. How lucky Zig was to have the help and care of so many people. We are grateful and blessed that you shared Zig's journey with him.
Zig was a trooper who lived with frontotemporal dementia for more than 10 years. Even during his illness, he continued to enjoy the little things, especially soaking up the sun in the courtyard and dancing. His illness helped the rest of us become more compassionate, patient, and understanding. Zig, by now you have probably played a game of tennis and had a beer or two. We miss you, and we take comfort knowing we will see you again. We will always love you.
Survivors include Carol Graff, Princeton; one son and daughter-in-law: Robert Zigmund and Jennifer Lake, Chicago; sister-in-law, Audrey Zigmund, Green Bay; two nieces: Shannon (Derrick) Hoffmann, Minneapolis, and Kelsey Zigmund, New York City; a great niece and great nephew, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
Zig was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Jim and Bill.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to a charity of your choice or the Boys & Girls Club of Manitowoc County.
