Shirley M. Martin, age 86, a Manitowoc resident, entered eternal life on Sunday evening, January 12, 2014 at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
Shirley was born on April 25, 1927 in Manitowoc. She was the daughter of the late Arnold and Elva Gerlach Mahnke. Shirley was a graduate of Lincoln High School with the class of 1945. On July 31, 1946 she married Carroll Martin in Manitowoc. She enjoyed being a wife and mother to their five children. From 1973 to 1986 Shirley was a Red Cross Volunteer. She chaired the Wheels Rolling Wheels Transportation Program and was the coordinator of the county wide transportation program for the elderly and handicapped for years. In 1981 Shirley was presented the Clara Barton Award-the highest award the Red Cross bestows on its volunteers. In 1983 and 1984 she was the Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Red Cross. Shirley and Carroll lived in Manitowoc until 1987 at which time they moved to New Mexico to retire. In 2013 she and Carroll moved back to Manitowoc to be closer to her family.
She is survived by her husband: Carroll; children: Sandy (Pete) Entringer, Minocqua, WI; Bonnie (John) Skadahl, West Bend, WI; Terry (Bruce) Larson, Bothell, WA; Bob (Mary) Martin, Beaver Dam, WI; Gail (Bob) Heidt, Cuyahoga Falls, OH; eight grandchildren: Cindy (Borje) Olsson, Craig (Jodie) Skadahl, Elizabeth Larson, Nicholas (Sheila) Martin, Brian Martin, Joel Martin, Michael DeMaria, and Danny DeMaria; eight great grandchildren: Nicole Olsson, Madeleine Olsson, Kat Skadahl, Zoe Skadahl, Cody Skadahl, Sienna Martin, Robbie Martin, and Jax Fowler; one sister: Sandy Johnson, Manitowoc, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents: Arnold and Elva Mahnke; two sisters: Marilyn Hardrath and Betty Valentine; two brothers: Lee and Dick Mahnke; one granddaughter: Jenny Olsson.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 15, 2014 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home with Rev. Bruce Huffer officiating. Cremation has taken place at the Harrigan Parkside Crematory and Chapel. Following the memorial services there will be a luncheon held for family and friends at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center located on the south property of the funeral home.
