Obituary

Sue M. (Schmalz) Lewis, a Manitowoc resident, passed away peacefully at Holy Family Memorial Hospital under the care of Sharon S. Richardson Hospice on July 21, 2021.  She was born on July 28, 1936 in Appleton, the daughter of Sterling W. and Dolores V. (Polzin) Schmalz, graduating from Appleton Class of 1954.  Eventually settling in Manitowoc, she retired after 25 years from Eck Industries in 1998.  Sue filled her life with many activities.  Sue became interested in sign language from a deaf/mute couple across the street and always retained the ability to communicate with the deaf world.  She enjoyed tennis, teaching tennis, and being in the Manitowoc County Open tournament.  She then turned to Jazzercise and was a regular for 20 years.  With her husband Chuck, they filled their yard with perennials and bird feeders.  Over the years, Sue had three very much-loved Labradors (Bo-Ten, Echo, and Abba) and supported the Manitowoc Humane Society along with other animal charities as well as other local charities.

Sue was generous with her friends, a nurturing mother, and a loving wife.  A frequent answer of the phone was, "What can I do for you?"  Sue met you with a smile, laughter and a willingness to help in every way.  She was generous to friends and family as well as her charity giving.  She had a positive outlook on life.  She would look through her address book and pick out a long-lost friend and send a card out of the blue.  Many a response added to her enjoyment.  Her cherry pie could not be topped and excelled in providing lovely eats for friends and family.  Sue was a delightful person and will be missed by so many people that she touched.

She is survived by her husband, Charles "Chuck" Lewis; sons, Paul Krueger and Matthew (Anna) Krueger; granddaughters, Megan Krueger and Megan (Matthew) Modugno; grandson, Daniel Willison; and sister, Beth (Scott) Stieber.  She is also survived by nephew, Erik Moore; niece, Sarah (Brien) Neudeck; and brothers-in-law, JJ (Lori) Lewis and Robbie Lewis.
